My story:

Hello my name is Nikki and I have been diagnosed with Narcolepsy for over 2 years now.  I first noticed my symptoms in Nov 03., they started out small and grew into a big problem.  The situation escalated out of control, when I fell asleep at the wheel and hit a parked car realizing at that point in my life all I did was sleep.  I was falling asleep on my feet at work and sleeping 10 to 12 hours every night.  Not much was being done by my family doctor so my mom and I set up my appointment at the sleep lab.  I was given my sleep study 10 days before my wedding, and got my diagnosis about a month after wards.  It took a while for the diagnosis to really sink in.  Once all the pieces fell into place, I fell to pieces.  My life has not been the same, and as sad as it makes me I know it never will be the same again.  The worst symptom for me is EDS or excessive daytime sleepiness.  Tired for me is a good day, there really is no way of describing the utter exhaustion that I battle every day.  It does not matter how much sleep I get, I am always and will always be tired.  There are medications available to help, I currently take 3 to try to keep my Narcolepsy under control.  I struggle through each day go to bed and then get up just to do it all over again.  Narcolepsy is not a killer, it is a thief.  It is an invisible assailant that robs us of our livelihood and energy.  Narcolepsy is a serious and overlooked problem.  Please help us spread awareness and understanding about this debilitating disease.  Thank you!

Best Regards In Health,
